OAS Welcome + Expectations

 Hi delegates! 

We are so excited to welcome you to BMUN 71 and the Organization of American States. 

In this committee, you will learn how member nations of OAS and corresponding institutions and policies have impacted differences in the economic, political, and social development between North and Latin America. Our first topic focuses on Addressing Socioeconomic Inequality in Education. Our second topic addresses Forced Displacement in Response to Human Rights Violations. 

This blog will act as our committee's informal avenue for discussion and communication before the conference -- and we'd love to see you interact with it! The purpose of this blog is to 1) allow you to actively engage with the content of this committee and 2) give you all the opportunity to learn about other countries’ policies before the debate actually starts. You can post comments on posts that we make and write about literally anything relevant to the topics at hand! For example, if you’ve found follow-up content or research you’d like to share, would like to discuss your country’s opinion on the topic, or have other ideas in mind, this blog is the place for that! Please write from the perspective of the country that you are representing.

To begin, I will touch on some important guidelines and expectations as you start your research:

Position Papers

We highly recommend taking advantage of the synopsis as the starting point to your research. It may seem really long (sorry), but we promise that it's a digestible read; plus, a good portion of it is images and citations.

OAS will use the standard, default position paper format. Position papers are due on February 12th to be considered for the Research Award, and February 19th to be considered for any committee award. Please reach out to us if you need more time, and we would be happy to grant an extension (no later than February 24th).

Procedure Guide

OAS will be using standard BMUN/MUN procedure. If you have any questions about the topics, the procedure, your position paper, or BMUN in general, please don't hesitate to contact us at oasbmunlxxi@bmun.org ☺

As a reminder, OAS will be using standard Position Paper format detailed on the committee page on the BMUN website . Besides the general format, we wanted to offer some tips on the research process and the formation of your paper. Research The biggest favor you can do for yourself in the writing process is to really apply time and effort into understanding the topics beforehand. Luckily, your generous dais has written to key to beginning this process: your synopsis! Not only do we recommend reading this synopsis, but we hope that you will interact with it. OAS LXXI Introductions

¡Hola todos!  My name is Jazmine Colon (she/her/ella), and I am thrilled to introduce myself as your head chair for this years session of OAS. I am currently a junior at UC Berkeley pursuing a double major in Political Science and Chicano/a Studies. Academically, I focus on legislative policy and government relations in regards to both private and public interests, with an emphasis on topics of education and representation for underserved communities. While this is my first year serving as a head chair, I have spent the past three years as a member of BMUN within the Organization of American States. This year, I strive to build on the accessible and respectful environment OAS fosters for delegates each year.
